Kaokoland 2026 Dashboard
Meeting date and time:
We will meet at Arebbush campsite in Windhoek on 20 March 2026 for our first night.
See the map below for detail.
Tour Distance:
From Windhoek to Swakkop is about 2500 km
Fuel availability:
Fuel will be generally available.
The longest distance between fuel pumps would be from the Epupa falls to Sesfonteinin about 650km on gravel and 4×4 driving. If you can get 800km between fuel stops on your vehicle on the open road, you should be ok.
Fuel purchase:
Credit cards will be generally excepted but be prepared for a card machine that is out of order. Best is to have one tank of fuel in cash with you. After your longest driving stint the Fuel stop is Fort Sesfontein. They only take cash.
Cash:
We will do most transactions in cash but cards will work in the large shops and big lodges.
Rands also work in Namibia and has a 1 to 1 rate, however Namibia $ do not work in the RSA. Thus the safe currency to carry is South African Rands.
Credit cards will also work from time to time. MasterCard might work but VISA remains the best option.
Meat and the red line:
A special note on the transportation of raw meat for this tour. Namibia has a red line running through the middle of our tour. No raw meat or raw chicken will be allowed through this line going south. So please pay special attention to the food prep section. This line is where we enter Etosha for the day. You can take your raw, frozen meat out of your freezer and leave it with reception at the lodge and collect it when returning from the park. From there we are good for the rest of the tour.
The day after our Palmwag nights is when we cross the line and you should have no raw meat with you anymore.
Groceries:
We will stop for groceries as is needed, but our main stops would be:
- Outju
- Opuwo
- Small shops with only essentials at other small towns.
Swimming gear:
Most of our lodges have swimming pools and guests always use it to cool down. Bring your swimming gear to lazy around a pool on the hot afternoons.
Suncream and a hat
220 Volt power:
We should have 220V as follows
Night 1,2,3,5,6,11,12,14. Ie we have long stretches without access to power.
Washing:
On this tour you are on your own and washing can be done as we go. Bring your washing line.
Toilets:
Flush toilets most nights, long drops for the rest. 2 non consecutive nights bush camp.
Showers:
Hot showers most of the time, cold showers for the rest. 2 nights bush camp.
4×4 Driving:
This is a 4×4 tour and we will be driving in sandy riverbed conditions and a bit of 4×4 coming down the mountains in to the Kaokoland/ Marienfluss area.
4×4 Stuff to bring:
I have all the recovery equipment, no need to bring anything along.
But if you want to bring your own stuff you are welcome.
What you do need to bring is a tyre pump and spade.
Water:
There is water for cooking and cleaning everywhere except the two bush nights. So no need to carry washing and cooking water.
For drinking water we will buy bottled water at the shops as we go.
For the two nights bush camp, Bring an empty 20 or 25 litre container for water. We will fill up at the camp before our bush night.
Weather:
We are in the Kaokoland at a very pleasant time.
We might encounter a bit of rain but only in the form of thunderstorms.
2nd Spare wheel:
Unfortunately this tour has some sharp rocks and a second spare is a good idea. However, no need to bring the whole wheel. Just bring a second spare tyre off the rim. It can be an old used one it does not matter. There are shops on the road where we can fix a tyre.
A loose tyre is lighter and you can pack stuff inside of it.
