Namaqualand and 50 Passes tours 2024
Meeting date and time:
Namaqua Flowers will meet on 23 August 2024 just outside Springbok at the Modderfontein guest farm for our first night. I will be there around 4pm.
The 50 Passes tour will meet on 29 August 2024 at the Cederberg winery campsite called Sanddrift, near ClanWilliam for our first night.
Fuel availability:
Fuel will be available on tour and no long range tanks are required.
Fuel purchase:
It is in South Africa so you know the drill.
Cash:
Cash would not be required but it is always good to have a few Rands on you. I normally suggest the equivalent of one tank of fuel.
Park fees:
Park fees are included for this tour, However seeing that some people have a Wild card, I will gladly use your wild card to save the group a few Rands. This will help to pay for firewood for the tour. If you don’t have a wild card don’t worry, I will pay your park fees, please don’t spend more money.
Groceries:
We will stop for groceries as is needed, we will be in towns regularly so a few days worth of food is good enough.
Washing:
On this tour you are on your own and washing can be done as we go. Bring your washing line or enough clothes…
Toilets:
Flush toilets are available on all nights except the 2nd night of the Namaqualand flowers tour. However there are clean long drops at the coastal camp site.
Showers:
Water and showers everywhere except for night 2 on the flower route. Bring a container to cary about 20 litre of water for that night. 4 x 5 liters or 10 x 2 liters will work depending on packing space.
4×4 Driving:
A little bit on the Namaqua route, and then mostly sandy conditions.
I also have all the recovery equipment, no need to bring any along. Just a tyre pump and spade.
The Baviaans and Bedrogfontein route has mountain passes and steep incline and declines so a bit of fun 4×4 driving there. Nothing to stress about everything is on recognised roads.
Note on Bedrogfontein Eco route in the passes tour. Rains in 2023 has closed the route due to the road being washed away. However because the route is being fixed and should be open for our tour, I have booked the campsite on the route for our last night. It is open because it is before the washed away section. If the route is closed we will still sleep at the planned campsite but not drive the route and exit ADDO at the Southern gate rather than the northern gate.
Water:
There is water for cooking and cleaning everywhere except night 3 on the flower route..
For drinking water we will buy bottled water at the shops as we go.
Weather:
We are in the area during a very pleasant time and decent temps are expected, however the odd cold front can cause a bit of havoc so bring warm bedding an extra blanket and a warm winter jacket.
The evenings generally cool down and if you want to hang around outside you would need a jacket.
