Nou gaan ons braai! ( barbeque )
In order not to have fights and bloodshed over a very sensitive matter, there are a few rules about our braai and fire:
- I make a fire every night, if needed, either be it for cooking or just for a campfire to sit by.
- I supply the wood or charcoal for this fire.
- I also supply braai stands and you only need to bring your own grid along.
- Wood is not always available and then I will use charcoal.
- Some countries are in the process of banning the sale of charcoal and in the next few years it will be more difficult to have our regular braai. So when we reduce the size of our fire, it is with our planet and availability of wood and charcoal in mind.
- I will generally make a fire for cooking and let it burn down to be able to cook on the fire. Please DO NOT put any paper, tissues, rubbish or cigarette buds in the fire until everybody has finished using the fire for cooking.
- Rubbish belongs in a rubbish bag, not the campfire.
IF YOU WANT TO USE YOUR OWN PORTABLE BRAAI.
In countries where road side charcoal is available, you can get charcoal from me. This is mainly in East Africa. However in Southern Africa I buy firewood and then if you want to use your own loose standing braai, please bring your own charcoal or wood for your own braai.
It has become more common for guests to bring their own braai and I have absolutely no problem with that. However it plays havoc with planning the fire and everybody knows a broken fire is no fun to cook on.
When everybody wants to “just take a few coals” the main fire is destroyed and those who wanted to use the main fire, suffers the consequences.
So please feel free to bring your own braai, just remember to bring your own charcoal for the nights where there might not be enough coals for loose braais.
On the long East Africa tours, I will organise charcoal for the camp and you are more than welcome to get charcoal from my charcoal box and make your own fire in your braai. No charge, no worries.
