Central Kalahari 2024 Dashboard

Meeting date and time:

We will meet at Khama Rhino Sanctuary. 1 Aug 2024 for our first night. I will arrive in the afternoon at about 5pm. See the map below.

We will depart from Khama the next morning at 8h00am

Tour Distance:

From Khama Rhino back to Khama Rhino it is about 1200 km

Fuel availability:

Fuel will be available at Rakops on our way in and out.

The longest distance between fuel pumps would be 550km.

Sandy and gravel.

Fuel purchase:

Credit cards will be generally excepted but be prepared for a card machine that is out of order. Best is to have one tank of fuel in cash with you.

We will fill up in Lethlakane just to be safe. Then top up in Rakops.

Cash:

One tank of fuel in cash, this will also cover you in case of a fine.

You can draw cash at an ATM when you enter Botswana.

Groceries:

We will stop for groceries in Lethlakane to get what you might have forgotten.

Washing:

Not really a long tour so I don’t think it will be necessary.

Toilets:

Flush toilets first and last night.

Rest of the nights, long drops.

Showers:

Hot showers first and last night.

Inside the park there are only buckets. If you have a fancy shower, this will be the tour to use it.

Otherwise a 5 litre bucket shower per person is plenty.

4×4 Driving:

This is a 4×4 tour and we will be driving in sand and gravel.

Bring your spade and a few Cokes to sip on whilst someone is stuck…..;-)

Just joking, we will all be fine, I will teach you the ropes as we go.

I also have all the recovery equipment, no need to bring any along. Just a tyre pump and spade.

Water:

There is water for cooking and cleaning outside of the parks but once we are inside of the parks you need to have your own water.

So water is the big thing.

What to do?

Reduce your water use.

Carry water for drinking and keep it separate. ( bottled inside the vehicle or whatever ) Then a second tank or drums for washing and showers.

Drinking water I would say 3 litre per person per day should work.

Wash water: A shower is very comfortable with 5 litre per person, you can get away with 3 litre per person. Once a day would mean 5 nights = 25 litre per person plus a bit for washing up dishes.

Weather:

We are in the Central Kalahari at a very pleasant time. The days are reasonably warm but the evenings are cool to cold.

Shorts for the days and a jacket for the evenings should do it.
