Meeting date and time:

We will meet at Riad Mboja ” Chez Ali Baba ” We are booked in the Riad Tuesday 23 April and checking out Thursday 25 April, 2 nights.

On 25 April you will check out of your room at the Riad, and catch a Taxi to Le Relais Campsite where you will get your motorhome and where we are for the night.

The next morning we will depart on our journey.

Camping cars:

Camping cars are bulky and often a bit big for small streets. However you have them as your primary way of getting around. So my experience is to use them to get to a main parking area or quiet area and then leave the camping car there. Then use a taxi or walk from there.

Take a few Euros extra for taxis, and just do it. Don’t think too much or have a brain f*rt about the cost. Sometimes it is just the more sensible option to use a taxi.

We tried to use a bus in Marrakech on our first visit, and in hindsight, walking or a taxi would have been a better option. The tour is too expensive to waste time waiting for a bus to save R50.

How we camp with a camping car:

With the car kitted out on the inside,  with kitchen and table and cooker top, the outdoors are much less of a thing. We will have a braai or two in the group and we will have a bit of kuiering together, but please don’t stress if we do not see each other as much as on our Southern Africa tours, or if we don’t sit around a fire at night.

We also found that cold meats and cheese and fresh breads with a glass of wine, covered many of our dinners as we would often have a meal during the day as well. So big dinners was not a thing for us unless we planned it.

Tour Distance:

From Marrakech and back to Marrakech, 2500 km

Fuel availability:

Fuel will be available everywhere.

Fuel purchase:

I would suggest enough Dirhams for 2 tanks of fuel which is about 2000 Dirham, or 200 Euro. For the rest we will use cards. Total fuel bill should be about 4400 MAD

Cash:

For basic spending money, I would say 1500 Dirhams per person for the trip would be about right.

For groceries you can normally use a card, also in large eateries and restaurants your card will work as well as most of your fuel. Even shops with expensive stuff in the medinas should take cards.

The camels balance we will have to pay in cash. I will have paid the deposit from RSA the balance will be 700 Dirhams per person.

So my best guess on cash would be 5000 Dirhams per vehicle and if you are doing camels, add 1400 Dirhams per vehicle.
(Ie. Fuel 2000, Spending money 3000, Camels 1400)

For all the cloth and carpets and touristy stuff bought in markets: Things cost what it cost in RSA as well. A nice table cloth maybe MAD500, a nice carpet maybe MAD2000, Leather bag maybe MAD400.

Changing Cash:

If you change your USD or Euro in to Dirham at the airport, remember to retain your slip. If you change any leftovers back when you leave you will be limited to a small amount that you are allowed to change back, unless you have your original slip.

Groceries:

We will stop for groceries as is needed.

The Carrefour group is a large group of supermarkets that works well and they sell everything from bread to wine to cold meats.

We will specifically have time to shop in, Marrakech, then again day 10 in Fes, day 16 in Mohammedia, and then at the end of tour Marrakech.

Washing:

We will find places that can do our washing, or we will make time to do it. I would say Merzouga day 7and 8, Fes Day 10, Casablanca day 15. Other wise soap and a washing line.

Water:

There is water for cooking and cleaning everywhere. And we will fill the camper tanks as we go. I am going to take my universal adapter for taps and might just buy a short hose pipe when I am in Marrakech. You are welcome to use my hose pipe.

We will buy bottled water at the shops as we go, for cold drinking water.

It is almost summer:

Almost summer means it will be hot in the day, so bring your swimming costume with. Many camps and hotels have swimming pools.
