Primates and great lakes 2025 Itinerary
Coffee and lunch stops:
Day 1. 13 December 2025
17h00 We meet at Nata Botswana for the first night. A restaurant is available for dinner.
Day 2.
7h30 Depart from our campsite and make our way to the border.
12h00 We cross in to Zambia, clear the border post and head towards Livingstone.
13h00 We should be in Livingstone and afternoon Falls activities are on the cards. Chopper flights, visiting the falls, sunset cruises or whatever you feel like doing. Waterfront Campsite.
Day 3.
In the morning we still have a bit of time to get a few activities done. We depart Livingstone at around 10am when everybody is ready.
10h00 We depart from camp and head to Lusaka. This is a driving day and we are just making some ground.
17h00 We arrive in camp for the night. Eureka.
Day 4.
8h30 Depart from our campsite
9h00 Shopping and fuel in Lusaka. Large Pick and pay and coffee shops. We take our coffee here. Exchange forex cash at the mall.
Note: Zambia only sells alcohol after 10am.
10h30 Depart from Lusaka.
This is another driving day. We take the copperbelt road and then on to the TANZAM highway.
17h00 Arrive at our campsite.
Day 5.
Day 6.
10h00 Depart from our campsite and head to the border.
We will sleep just before the border. Kings highway Kulunga
Day 7.
Depart from our campsite very early, as in first light, and head to Lake Tanganyika for three nights.
The day becomes long because of the border and time zone change. And early departure is important.
17h30 Arrive at our campsite on Lake Tanganyika.
Day 8,9
We take a rest on the lake with boat cruises, coffee shop lunches, and a lovely dinner on the lake shore.
Day 10
We have a late departure and a short day. Sleeping just outside Katavi National park.
Day 11
8h30 Depart from our camp and head towards a town called Kibondo.
We are in a hotel for the night, again depending on road conditions
Day 12.
8h00 We depart from our accomodation and head to the Rwanda Border.
11h00 This can be a long crossing and we settle in to get our vehicles and ourselves through.

Rwanda is not very developed as far as camping goes. But we will stay at the Urugo womans centre.
Day 13, 25 Dec.
It is Christmas day and we take a short drive in to Kigali.
We are at Fasenda Zenga for two nights.
Restaurant available.
Day 14.
10h00 For those interested we visit the Genocide Museum. It is a tough emotional experience but I think very important for every person to experience.
Own speed and own time.
Day 15.
9h00 We head out to the border and cross in to Uganda.
12h00 We start border procedures, normally not a big issue.
14h00 We arrive in a town called Kisoro, for three nights.
Catch up on a bit of groceries
Day 16.
We head out for a coffee experience, the best natural coffe experience on a local small farm where everything is done by hand.
The rest of the day we take off and relax.
For those interested there is a cultural tour available. My local guide will take you on it if you want to.
Day 17. 29 Dec.
We do our gorilla trekking for the day.
Day 18
8 am. We depart to our Fort Portal base for our Chimp trekking.
We stop in Fort portal for whatever we need. They have a nice coffee shop.
Our camp is 30 minutes outside of town. Nukurubu reserve
Day 19, 31 Dec
8h00 We set off for our chimp trekking experience. This will take half the day and we should be back in camp just after lunch.
In the afternoon you could pop in to Fort Portal for shopping. If the shops are open. We also stay at this lodge for old years eve. It should be the quietest place around, I will tell you the story about noise when we are traveling.
Day 20,21,22
8h00 Depart from camp and drive towards Kampala.
16h00 Arrive at our campsite on the Victoria Nile river. We will be here for three nights
We take a break for the next three nights. Kayak on the Nile, or river cruises, 4 wheel motor bike drive outings, rafting, whatever you feel like doing.
A few nice things to do around. Boat cruises, river kayaking, lunch in the restaurant etc.
Another opportunity for laundry.

Day 23
7h00 Depart from our campsite.
9h00 We start our border procedure in to Kenya.
11h00 We should be done with our border crossing.
17h00 Arrive at our campsite in Kenya.
Day 24
8h00 We make our way to Nairobi. Coffee at a coffee shop, then on to the border and pass back in to Tanzania.
17h00 We are just outside of Arusha for the night. Snake park.
Day 25.
8h00 A bit of grocery shopping to prepare for the final stretch.
10h00 We head to the town of Karatu for 2 nights.
A bit of tourist shopping, coffee shop and a bite to eat as part of a relaxed day is on the cards. Flaminge lodge.
Day 26.
8h00 For those interested we head in to the Ngorongoro crater for the day. We use local tour operators and their vehicles. The cost depends on how many of us are going as we rent vehicles and drivers and share the cost.
Day 27. 8 Jan 2026
We are heading home.
We start this journey at even before first light. We have a very long day, but it is doable. for those with a GPS, you can set off on your own and just get there for the night. Old Farmhouse, Iringa.
Day 28
8h00 The previous long day calls for a shorter day and we head up to Mbeya for the night.
Day 29
9h00 We cross in to Malawi
15h00 Arrive at Chitimba campsite Malawi, The group should be tired and we will spend two nights here.
Day 30
Off day. Carlsberg beers on the Malawi beach. Swim in the lake, eat restaurant food, CHILL……
Day 31
8h00 Depart from our campsite.
10h00 Stop for shopping Shoprite
11h00 Depart Mzuzu town
15h00 Arrive at Zambia border at Chipata and head in to Zambia. We sleep at Mama Rula just outside Chipata,
Day 32
7h00 Depart from our campsite.
We head to Lusaka for the Night. Own speed and own time.
Day 33
7h00 An early departure and we are heading to the Botswana Border. Our final stretch as we push down to Livingstone.
In Livingstone it is your choice to stay for a night or two extra, however I am heading to the Botswana border and Nata.
Once in Livingstone you can peel off and stay for and extra day.
In Kasane it is your choice to stay for a night or two extra, maybe visit Chobe park?
However, if time allows I am heading to Nata for the night.
Day 34, 15 Jan 2026
Very early morning I head home to JHB.
